Amazon has made an announcement of S3 intelligent-tiring optimizations with the existing service of S3 Glacier which provides secure and durable backup and archiving of data for the long term at a reasonable cost.

Amazon has made an announcement of S3 intelligent-tiring optimizations with the existing service of S3 Glacier which provides secure and durable backup and archiving of data for the long term at a reasonable cost. Without any prior knowledge of data access patterns, users are already able to use the facility of S3 with the feature of intelligent-tiering and new optimizations are an addon to it.

Two main optimizations are launched and added with this existing two years’ service. The amount of manual work needed for archiving any object will be minimized and the objects that are not accessed for so long will be archived automatically.

Without any effect on the operational overhead or performance, optimization of storage costs is already featured in the storage class known as S3 intelligent-tiering. Users were not able to choose the right storage class and at the time when access patterns are irregular optimization, the cost was also problematic which was solved by intelligent-tiering already.

More cost-saving can be done prominently by these new optimizations. The user demands were there for archiving rarely accessed objects to reduce the costs further for storage and that is confirmed now. As per the announcement, at a very low cost, the users can use the deep archive access tier or archive access tier. The configuration option is also there at the bucket, object tag level, or prefix in this both archive access tires. There is the chance for the users to opt for any one of the access tiers or both of them as per the user’s requirement. Low latency access and high throughput are available now for the data of the users whenever they needed with S3 intelligent-tiering.

If any data is not used for more than or equal to 180 days, users will require to pay $1 per month for every TB after the launch of these access tiers. For the rarely accessed data users will be able to save 95% of costs that they spend on storage previously S3 already helped to save 40% costs.

If any user opts for both of the access tiers, the objects that are not accessed for 180 days will be automatically moved to the deep archive tier and initially, after 90 days of non-accessed objects will be moved to the archive accessed tier. The objects can be retrieved by the users if required and if the non-accessed object is accessed it will be moved to the frequent access tier. For deep archive access tier and archive access tier, the retrieve time is 12 hours and 3-5 hours respectively.
